When it launched the 454-hp M4 CS earlier this year, BMW promised it'd build more M cars wearing the CS badge. German site BimmerToday (via BMWBlog) reports that an M3 CS will soon join the M4 and the long-rumored M2 CS. There's one problem though—the name.

The CS name, which stands for Coupe Sport, is a reference to BMW's legendary shark-nosed E9 coupe built from 1968 to 1975. Applying the CS badge to hotter versions of the M2 and M4 makes perfect sense then, but the M3 is, well, a sedan. So, BMW can either ignore the CS name's origins for this hotter M3, change what CS stands for, or give it a different name entirely.

But let's leave this pedantic nomenclature discussion aside. This hotter M3's reported specs are much more interesting.

BimmerToday reports that the M3 "CS" will get same 454-hp 3.0-liter inline-six, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and other various lightweight pieces as the M4 CS. It's set to be the most powerful M3 ever built and is said to be able to run around the Nurburgring in less than 7:40. This M3 will also get similar aero upgrades as the M4 CS and the carbon-fiber hood straight off the M4 GTS.

Apparently, the M3 CS will debut sometime after Spring next year, making it the last M3 variant we'll see before the current-generation 3-Series is replaced entirely.

We're still waiting to drive the M4 CS ourselves, but all signs point to greatness. Hopefully this hotter M3 will be just as good.
