The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is here and it will compete in the midsize two-door premium segment against similar offerings from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. BMW 4 Series Coupe aims to lure customers away from the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, two models that had a more recent refresh.

So why did we choose to compare the 4 Series against the E-Class Coupe? Just as in our previous comparison, we wanted to go with two models that are close in size and dimensions, and that are based on the mid-size sedans of their respective brand. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is based on the C-Class sedan, while the 4 Series uses the same platform as the F30 3 Series.

All three models are moving in a window in overall length of less than eight centimeters and are based on the mid-size sedans of their respective brand. Without a doubt that the C-Class Coupe is the “typical” competitor here, but from a design standpoint, we chose the E-Class Coupe for this exercise.

The BMW 4 Series comes with a rear-wheel drive and xDrive setup, while the Audi A5 uses its renowned QUATTRO system. The E-Class Coupe is the only one from the bunch with a rear-wheel drive only setup.

Design wise each one of those three models have their own following. The Audi A5 stands out with a flashy, younger look that dominates the road with its oversize front-grille and road-focused LED headlights. The E-Class has the allure of a gentleman with fine, yet sharp and attractive lines that emphasize the sporty character of a two-door premium car. The new 4 Series, while moved away a bit from the concept car shown in Detroit, it still keeps the DNA of the brand with dynamic, aggressive and sporty lines, a lower and muscular stance, and a premium look.

Inside, the typical comparison stands here as well. The Audi A5 is all about gadgetry-driven design and eye-candy,  an angle that the brand’s followers certainly enjoy. The E-Class Coupe is all about class, quality and craftsmanship, while not sacrificing the sporty angle of the car. The new 4 Series is quite a surprise for us. While the interior is similar to the F30 3 Series, there are still plenty of fine details that makes it stand out and differentiate itself from the sedan. High quality materials are used all-around, and additional gadgets like the iDrive Touch Controller are now available to order. The driver-oriented architecture is maintained not only within the exterior design, but also inside where the cockpit wraps around the drive. The standard eight-speed automatic gearbox comes with the wheel-mounted paddle shifters, but fans of the manual can always order the no-cost option.

If there is one thing that those cars share inside is the great sport seats, typical to a dynamic two-door vehicle.

Plenty of other details differentiate the three cars from each other, but we will turn it over to you to tell us what your thoughts.
