Following the success of the runaway-hit BMW 2002 compact sports sedan of 1962-1976, BMW realized that it needed to capitalize on that concept by modernizing the 2002's formula. In 1975, BMW introduced the world to the 3 Series. The first generation, known as the E21, ranged from the anemic, 75-horsepower, 1.6-liter inline-4-powered 315, to the sporty 320is and 323i models, which boasted 110 and 143 horsepower from their injected motors. It was enough to make the 2300 pound first-generation 3 Series a blast to drive. These days, the E21 323i remains a favorite among classic BMW enthusiasts. Keep in mind that the 323i was the top of the line, as the M3 wouldn't be introduced until the second generation of 3 Series. The E21 cars are the most basic and, in many ways, offer the purest 3 Series driving experience.
