Introduced on Wednesday, April 16: 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
What is it? A 4-door 4 Series that completes a pretty family of coupe, convertible and M4 models.
Is it real? Yes, but stay with us: BMW was famed for its 3 Series sedans, wagons, coupes, convertibles and M cars, but it has rebranded its compact coupe and convertible as 4 Series instead. BMW will now sell a 4-door 3 Series, a stretched 3 Series GT hatchback and this 4-door hatchback version of the 4 Series coupe.
What they said: Tom Plucinsky, a BMW spokesman, delineated crucial differences between the 3 Series sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe: “The 4 Series has a more luxurious interior, makes more of a design statement, and the back seat is a little more compromised,” he said. “If you want a little more style but still need four doors, this might be the way to go.”
What they didn’t say: If even auto journalists can’t keep BMW’s exploding lineup from scrambling their brains, how are consumers supposed to keep up?
