BMW is recalling nearly 600,000 3-series and M3 models from 2000-2006. In certain cars, a safety defect in the passenger front airbag could produce internal pressure, causing the inflator to rupture on deployment.
BMW says that in the event of a crash, metal fragments could strike the passenger or other occupants.
Cars affected include the 2000-2005 3-series sedan, 2000-2006 3-series coupe, 2000-2005 3-series sports wagon, 2000-2006 3-series convertible and the 2001-2006 M3 coupe and convertible.
BMW will notify owners and dealers, and will replace the airbag where necessary. Notices will be mailed to owners in August; the recall is expected to begin in October, when the supply of parts is available.
This is the same airbag supplier, Takata, that was responsible for Subaru’s recall last week, which affected the Baja, Legacy, Outback and Impreza models from 2003-2004.
Owners can contact BMW at (800) 525-7417 or email at Media Alternately, owners can contact NHTSA at (888) 327-4236 or go to safercar.gov for more information.
