Philadelphia police said Thursday that they are continuing to follow up with their investigation into the armed robbery and carjacking of Baltimore Ravens player and Ardmore native Bernard Pierce.

Pierce is the grandson of former Lower Merion Commissioner Ora R. Pierce who represented Ardmore from 1986 until 2002.

According to Philadelphia police, Pierce was driving his 2001 BMW X6 with a friend at about 5:30 p.m. when he stopped at a pizza shop on the 7400 block of Drexel Rd. in Philadelphia near the corner of Haverford Road.

Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker said Pierce had stopped when he spotted someone he had played football with in the past. Pierce got out of the car to speak with the man. During the time they were talking. During the time they were speaking, other men walked up, spoke and left. A short time after one of the men left the scene, a blue Camry or Malibu drove up stopped near Pierce’s car. Two men, a driver and passenger, were in the car.

“A passenger gets out of the car … with a black revolver, points the gun at Pierce. Pierce goes to the ground, he takes his wallet, car keys a couple of cell phones,” Walker said. The suspect then got into Pierce’s BMW and drove eastbound on Haverford with the man in the blue car following him.

Police said there was no good surveillance video of the crime. Police described the man as an African-American and was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with blue jeans.

“We’re not sure yet, we’re still investigating that,” Walker said when asked whether there might have been any connection with the people Pierce was talking to and the carjacker. “As far as right now we’re not sure if he was robbed because it was a high-end car or robbed because he is an NFL football player.”

Police are chasing down both possibilities as leads where someone saw an $80,000 BMW sitting there and took the opportunity or might have known who he was.

The car was recovered Monday on the 4500 block of North Carlisle St. without any damage although additional items were taken from the car. Walker said police are still accounting for those items. No one was injured during the robbery.

Pierce was born in Ardmore on May 10, 1990 and attended Lower Merion High School for a year before going to Glen Mills School. He later went to Temple University. As a rookie with the Baltimore Ravens in 2012, he finished the regular season with 532 yards in 108 rushing attempts and made seven catches for 47 yards.

Anyone with information or who might have been in the area at the time of the robbery or might have seen the car being ditched on Carlisle Street can contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or 215-686-3183 or 215-686-3184.
