A man injured in a hit-and-run Saturday night is improving but still has a long road ahead of him, his daughter said.

"He's doing better," Melissa Grant said, adding that her father will be in the hospital for at least the next several weeks.

Milton Hilbrands, 61, was struck by a car near 41st Street and Norton Avenue just before midnight on Saturday. Police later found the car, a dark-colored BMW, but are still trying to find the driver. A witness said the BMW and another car appeared to be racing.

Hilbrands suffered two broken legs, broken ribs, a broken arm and a brain bleed, police spokesman Sam Clemens said Monday.

Close family friend Brooke Moen set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover Hilbrands' medical expenses. Nearly 50 people donated $2,695 in one day, a figure that Moen said showed Hilbrands' good reputation in the community.

"Milt's such a loved person," Moen said.

Terri Stanevich first met Hilbrands 10 years ago. Hilbrands always made her and her sister feel welcome when they came over, Stanevich said, and even rode his motorcycle with her. She describes him as a man with a sense of humor who never seemed to get angry.

"He always opened up his house to us," she said. "He always did what he could."

Stanevich heard about the hit-and-run soon after it happened, but didn't know Hilbrands was the victim until her sister told her the next day.

"I was devastated," Stanevich said. "I couldn't believe it."

Stanevich is hopeful that the driver of the car that hit Hilbrands will be found so he or she can face justice.

"It's still hard to think about," she said of the accident. "Milton did not deserve to be just left there."

Moen said she hopes the person who hit Hilbrands comes forward.

"If I hit somebody, I couldn't imagine just leaving them on the side of the road," Moen said. "I thought he should've stopped to see if he was OK."
