[5] Bmw 335i M Sport At This Week Issue

BMW is refreshing the ubiquitous 3-series for 2016. The car that’s responsible for one in four global BMW sales gets more power from the available I6, a revised suspension setup and an improved electric power steering system that the company says enhances driving dynamics. Later in 2016 we’ll see a hybrid too.

BMW introduced the 3-series in 1975, but it didn’t make it to the U.S. until 1976. That makes 2016 a 40th birthday of sorts, so here’s to you, 3-series. Congrats on being over the hill.

The 335i is replaced by the 340i name, though displacement doesn’t change. It will get the first application of the company’s new 3.0-liter inline-six. Internally known at the B58, it will deliver 320 hp (20 more than this year’s 335i) and 330 lb-ft of torque (30 more than this year). It still uses BMW’s TwinPower technology, which consists of a twin-scroll turbo, VANOS variable camshaft timing and Valvetronic variable valve lift. The 320i and 328i continue with 180 hp/200 lb-ft and 240 hp/255 lb-ft, respectively from their four-cylinder engines.

The 3-series line comes standard with an eight-speed automatic, but a six-speed manual (with rev matching) is available as a no-cost option. Paddle shifters are standard on 328i, 328d and 340i models. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system is optional across the range.

BMW changed the geometry of the chassis with new front struts (including five-bolt upper anchors), a redesigned electric power steering system, revamped rear dampers and updated stability control. BMW says these updates translate to better handling and more feedback to the driver. Body roll is also reduced, according to BMW. Adaptive suspension is optional.

A Track Handling package is now on the option sheet. It includes the Variable Sport Steering system, Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport brakes with high-temp brake pads. It also comes with 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Visually, the 2016 BMW 3-series looks mostly the same. It comes with new LED daytime running lights, which are moved further apart, broader side air intakes and new taillights. The 320i and 328i now get twin tailpipes while the 340i gets individual pipes on the left and right.

The previous Sport Line package is now standard on everything but the 320i; it includes black kidney grilles, black B-pillars and high-gloss black on the rear bumpers. The tailpipe is also in black chrome. Inside, the package adds sport seats, a new instrument cluster and anthracite headliner. The Luxury package will gussy things up, and the M Sport and M Aerodynamic package will still be offered as well.

The new 3-series will have boatload of efficiency features such as the Proactive Driving Assistant, which uses navigation data to save fuel, an on-demand cooling system pump, electronically controlled oil pump and an air conditioning compressor that disconnects when not in use. Eco Pro mode, selectable through the Driving Dynamics Control, will disconnect the engine when the driver lifts off the throttle at speed letting the engine idle in neutral, which uses less fuel.

Later in 2016 the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid will launch with a (preliminary) 250-hp, 310-lb-ft system output and a top speed of 140 mph. EV range will be about 22 miles on a charge.

The new 3-series offers all of the connectivity stuff we’re used to like navigation, LTE Wi-Fi, USB ports and smartphone integration. It comes with a built-in SIM card so passengers can use the services even if they forgot their phone. That includes the Concierge Service, which allows drivers to select points of interest while driving, such as pharmacies, restaurants or hotels, make a reservation if desired, and have them sent straight to the vehicle as a navigation destination together with all the relevant contact data. BMW’s full-color Head-Up Display is optional.

The 2016 BMW 3-series goes on sale this August.
