[8] Bmw Coupes Making Today Picture

Here's something that totally flew under our radar–BMW has stopped building the US-spec 6-Series coupe. You can still get a 2018 6-Series Gran Coupe and convertible, but quietly, the classic two-door hardtop has disappeared from the American lineup. The 6er Coupe isn't quite dead, however, since you can still find a new one for sale.

A BMW spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track that US-spec 6-Series coupes silently went out of production in February. Currently, it's unclear if BMW has any intention of bringing the 6-Series Coupe back.

Last year, we reported that BMW plans on killing off the 6-Series lineup in favor of a new revival of the 8-Series nameplate. Since then, camouflaged 8-Series test mules in both coupe and convertible bodystyles have been spied during cold-weather testing. Interestingly, there's a rumor that the 6-Series name could live on for a successor to the outgoing 5-Series GT hatchback.

BMW doesn't report the sales percentage for each 6-Series, but generally speaking, there's not much of a market for pure coupes anymore. That's why BMW and its German rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, are so keen on offering four-door "coupes."

We hope the 6-Series coupe will make a comeback, but we're not too optimistic about its prospects. Hopefully the 8-Series will fill the void.
