A judge Monday sentenced a former Iowa City dog groomer who pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges to two years of probation.
Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Lucas Van Orden, V after he kicked a corgi while working as a groomer at Creature Comfort Veterinary Clinic on July 9. Some of the dog's ribs were broken and its lungs were bruised. The dog has since recovered.
The clinic's owners fired Van Orden after the incident. Van Orden is the son of the clinic's practice manager.
He initially faced an animal neglect charge, but the charge was later changed to the more serious animal abuse charge. Van Orden could have faced up to two years in prison for the crime.
Van Orden pleaded guilty last month.
