CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMORELacey resident Mindy Morley and a friend, along with their service dogs, went to last Sunday’s Warped Tour show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. They only made it past bag check.
Security officials would not allow Morley and her friend Carlstadt resident Heather Masch into the show with their service dogs, two Cardigan Welsh corgis who are trained as medical alert dogs.
“I was really upset about it,” Morley said. She said she was “just going to have fun because I’ve been sick for so long and I am finally feeling better so I wanted to get out and do something different.”
Morley said venue security told them they needed to see the dogs’ vaccination records. Morley, who has taken her 3-year-old service dog Radke to concerts and others venues, such as the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, said those records are not necessary. (The dogs have special ear plugs to protect their ears.)

“We were right there with everyone coming in from bag check, it was really embarrassing,” said Masch said.
Morley said she contacted the arts center earlier to check on the service dog policy. If they were told to bring the records, they would have complied, Masch added.
“I called in advance and said, ‘I am bringing a service dog, is there anything I need to know?’ And they said no,” Morley said.
Neither Morley nor Masch have had problems before. “I have not had a problem with any other venue as far as being denied access,” Masch said. “This is the first time.”
Masch, Morley and a friend were given a refund for the tickets, which cost about $300, they said. “They voided our tickets,” Masch said. “They issued a refund and voided them.”
And Masch and Morley weren’t alone. According to News 12, a third person with a service dog was denied entry to the concert as well.
In a statement, Live Nation — which runs the Arts Center — said the three were “were unfortunately denied entry due to some confusion around policies regarding service animals.”
“Event security acted with their best intentions and understanding around these policies including requesting proof of vaccination,” Live Nation said in a statement to Press on Your Side. “Since the ticket holders did not have proof of vaccination, security was unable to allow them access into the venue. “
But after investigating further, Live Nation discovered that proof of vaccination “may not be required in certain circumstances.”
“We regret the error and will be reaching out to the patrons directly in the hopes that they will feel comfortable to return to the venue with their service animals in the future,” Live Nation said. “We will do our best to educate staff at all our venues regarding the clarification of these policies.”
Federal regulations seem to be clear.
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, service dogs, which are individually trained to do work or perform task for people with disabilities, are allowed to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where the public is allowed to go.
Staff are only allowed to ask if the dog is required because of a disability and what task or work it has been trained to perform, the law states.
A person can’t be asked to remove the service animal unless the dog is out of control and the handler can’t control it or the dog is not housebroken, the law states.
