Crime & SafetyPolice: Stony Brook Man on Drugs Crashes Into 3 Cars, Flees Scene With Son in CarThe man's 18-month-old son was in his car at the time, police say.Ryan Bonner, Patch StaffPosted Sat, May30, 2015 at 7:12 pm ET|Updated Sun, May31, 2015 at 12:28 pm ET

Police say a Stony Brook man was high on drugs when he sideswiped two vehicles on Stony Brook Road before veering across Route 347, striking another car and then a fence before fleeing the scene with his 18-month-old son in his car on Friday afternoon.

Craig Miller, 32, was arrested less than two hours later and faces numerous charges, including felony counts of aggravated DWI and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs.

According to police, Miller was heading south on Stony Brook Road at about 12:10 p.m. when his Nissan sideswiped two vehicles that were stopped in the right-hand turn lane at the Route 347 intersection. Witnesses say Miller was slumped over the wheel of his car at the time and his car began to roll into the intersection.

Miller's car then hit a Toyota RAV4 and crashed into a fence on the south side of Route 347 in Lake Grove, police said.

The driver of a BMW that was sideswiped told police that he broke a window on Miller's car at the direction of a 911 operator in an attempt to get Miller's son, who was strapped into a rear carseat, out of the vehicle. The BMW driver said the breakage of the window awoke Miller, who then fled.

Miller was arrested shortly before 2 p.m. after police were able to obtain the license plate number of the Nissan, which led them to Miller's Stony Brook home.

Miller is charged with aggravated DWI with a child passenger 15-year-old or younger, a felony under Leandra's Law, operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and third degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The impaired by drugs charge is a felony as Miller was arrested on the same charge as a misdemeanor in August 2014. That case is still pending.

Miller was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday. He is being held on $15,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail.

Editor's note: One of the vehicles that was sideswiped was occupied by the wife and daughter of the person who wrote this story.
